Music Icons of The 90s

It only seems like yesterday that Oasis’ Wonderwall was dominating the radio. A true mix of pop and rock was peppered throughout the decade, however, it could be said that there was an underlying feeling of melancholy that poured out of the hearts of our 90s musicians. Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain was in his prime, delivering an addictive sound that drew in fans globally until his devastating demise in April 1994 in which he took his own life. Nevertheless the Nirvana legacy lives on to this day. It wasn’t the end for band member Dave Grohl who took the world by storm as frontman of the very popular band, Foo Fighters.

The 90s was also responsible for the distinctive sound of Red Hot Chili Peppers who have continued to produce hit after hit. Despite being formed in 1983, their... Read more

What Does It Take To Create A Classic?

It's fair to say that it’s not just a gap in time that gives an album or single the “classic” tick of approval. In the 2000s, it’s becoming a lot easier and faster to become known or even famous with all the social networking sites available as well as reality television talent shows.

These platforms no doubt provide an opportunity for up-and-coming musicians to get noticed, but how many of these talents actually have longevity?  When comparing the careers of musicians in the last 10 to 15 years to those established over 30 years ago, the amount of time, effort (and some would say, talent!) put in seems significantly different.

It could be said that some of the main differences between music 30 years ago and music of today, is there were definite trends accompanying... Read more

Long Live Rock and Roll

It’s only when we think about the Era of Rock and Roll and the number of films that have been based on the genre that we understand the impact its had on so many of us over the years.

When the film ‘Almost Famous’ starring Kate Hudson was made in 2000, we were reminded of the life of a rockstar as we went on tour with the fictional band Stillwater, their groupies and accompanying journalist.

As fans, we want to know more about our idols on a personal level or at least think we might be able to get a glimpse of what their personal lives entail even though they’re already so involved in their public profile.

Perhaps our need-to-know is satisfied if we see it documented or in the script of a film. The Beatles definitely made their mark in the film industry, featuring in... Read more

70s Sensation

An era of music that won’t ever be matched, the 70s was a great time for the music industry. Responsible for albums such as Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born to Run’, Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, Eagles ‘Hotel California’, and Rolling Stones’ ‘Sticky Fingers’, the 70s epitomized music excellence.

Back then, the artists were true influencers, trends were started and followed and albums just seemed to get better and better. None more so than Aussie rock band ACDC.

It was 1974 when ACDC recorded their first album, High Voltage. Dreamed up by his sister Margaret, Angus Young had adopted his characteristic school-uniform stage outfit. This however, was not before trying other costumes such as Spider-Man, Zorro, a gorilla, and a parody of Superman, named Super-Ang. In fact in... Read more

More Than Just The Music

It takes more than simply replicating a classic album or song to recreate its original magic. Musicians, singers, and rock bands that have made their mark in history, and in many cases still continue to impress today, usually bring their audience something unique.

Like all creatives’, musicians are artists. While some of the world’s musical icons were typical of a particular era, their audience yearned for something more, something individual that only that particular person, group or act could deliver.

Covering a classic and inspiring the audience can be a tough gig unless the individuality of the original band is made a priority by those who are up to taking the act. Is listening to a cover of a Metallica song going to stir up the same emotions as it did originally with... Read more

Lovin' the 80s

“I’ve got love for you if you were born in the 80s”… well, at least Calvin Harris does. For those of us born a little earlier than the 80’s, along with fond memories of colour blocking, glitter, shoulder pads and films such as Teen Wolf and Dirty Dancing, there’s a certain realization that, for all the trash talk on the 80’s, musicians from this decade really did produce some timeless classics.

On initial call out for 80’s standout hits here in the office, the roll call includes Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’, Prince’s ‘When Doves Cry’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’…

Just mentioning three songs isn’t really fair, there must be more! If you’ve got a favourite 80s song that you still can’t get enough of we would love to hear it, better yet, the album it’s from! Submit your... Read more
